I drove down to SB to see Hassman with Manhattan Transfer.
This time they played trio, Yaron Gershovsky who we all know from Wayne Shorters first great fusion band(i hope), Mike Pope on bass(from chick's electric band), and Hass.
If any 3 guys can take music to the creative limit, without getting in the way of one lyric or vocal improve line, it's them. It was beautiful playing.
Hass' time was a rock. He had shakers tied to his hi hat ankle on some tunes, taborines, whistles, chimes, and all sorts of tricks. He played a ridiculous drum intro with brushes at lightning speed on Cheryl Bentyne's swing version of Tea For Two. He also traded some very musical yet chop heavy 8's and 16's on the rhythm change "Airmail Special". His professionalism floored me again. You forget after a while until you see someone play again, then the inspiration comes back.
The real reason for my post is this; I went backstage to meet Hass and saw him rapping to Kenny Ranking amongst some other music icons that were in the audience, and I waited. I then spoke to him, he was very gracious, and then I asked, well, who's going to sub for you on this gig when you're out with Scofield? He then said," I'm not sure. They're very picky with drummers", he then mentioned maybe Ralph Humphrey, but he's still looking for a drummer. Knowing that some people on this board are actually pro drummers, you might want to drop him a line. Sight reading and playing all styles well I suppose is a must. My reading sucks.
From what I know he still hasn't found a drummer that can even cover Manhattan Vibes. Last I heard Joel Rosenblatt fell on his face.
This may be a ticket to some amazing gigs for those of you who can play.

HAHAHA! Great review Rob, I couldn't make the show. It sold out pretty fast.
There's not much more you can say. The dude is an all around monster musician. He's one of the few in NYC or LA who's in the studio everyday whenever he's not on the road. Hass and Pelton.
You won't see me going for those gigs. YIKES!
That sounds like it was a fantastic show. Great line-up.
I've long dug the Transfer & now dig on the vibes thx to those of you in here.
I'm looking forward to catching one of their shows in the future, but as I'm in the SE-US, sometimes it's slim pickin's in this neck of the woods for cultural art-music...altho there's pa-lennnnty of "nose-pickin's" [music] [img]tongue.gif[/img] ...altho MT has come here in the past, so there may be hope for the so-called civilized world yet... [img]wink.gif[/img]

Anyone know if HASS is touring with Manhattan Transfer in Europe too?
They play here in Denmark too, ( Gah in a provincial city called Vejle, Charlie Watts lived there a couple of years ) only a 3hour drive though

I think Hass is doing the tour. I posted a question on his forum about the gigs in Finland and he said that he will be with them. So I'm pretty sure that he is going to do the one in Denmark as well.
Those guys have dates booked well into 2006 (!)
Just looking at that schedule makes we want to be a professional touring drummer. Check out the places these guys get to visit while getting paid for doing what they love best in life.
